Accidental overpayments

While most of our readers will sensibly be entrusting BKL with the filing of tax returns, some few may be doing it yourselves. The deadline is – of course – this coming Saturday.

One hint for DIYers: remember that the calculation of the tax due for the year does not take into account any payments on account which you have already made. Quite why this should be so puzzles us – it’s probably paranoiac to imagine that it’s a devious plot to get you to overpay your tax by accident. But, whatever the reason, make sure you check. If you end up overpaying by mistake, expect to wait a month or so before being reunited with your money.
