‘The SNP has warned that widespread closures of HMRC offices will undermine efforts to reduce the amount of tax that remains uncollected. It comes after the Revenue unveiled plans to close 137 tax offices around the UK. The party’s business spokeswoman, Hannah Bardell, suggested the majority of the UK’s tax gap of £34bn could be made up by SMEs having better advice and guidance on their tax affairs. She suggested the closures will undermine advice to firms and increase errors and miscommunication.
