I work to bring order and certainty to clients dealing with IHT, trusts and estates, especially when cross‑border considerations make things less straightforward. For me, the value comes from making difficult decisions easier and ensuring the right outcomes for the people involved.
With over 15 years specialising in inheritance tax (IHT), UK and offshore trusts, and estates and probate matters, Ryan brings a practical, measured approach to issues that often combine technical complexity with sensitive personal circumstances. He focuses on simplifying complexity, anticipating risks, and ensuring clients clearly understand their options. His experience across both planning and compliance enables him to see the wider picture and tailor solutions that are robust, realistic and client-focused.
As Head of IHT, Trusts and Estates and Head of Legal Practice, Ryan leads the firm’s specialist tax and legal offering in these areas, including heading up BKL’s probate business. His role involves guiding clients through technically challenging and personally significant decisions while maintaining the highest standards of compliance and professional practice.
Ryan joined BKL in February 2024 after almost six years at a Big Four firm. Prior to that, he spent a decade working in IHT, trusts and estates roles, building deep expertise across both UK and offshore structures.
He regularly works with:
- High-net-worth individuals and families
- Trustees and offshore fiduciary service providers
- Entrepreneurs and owner-managed businesses
- International families with UK connections
- Executors and personal representatives
His areas of specialism include:
- UK inheritance tax advice and planning
- UK and offshore trust taxation and governance
- Estate and probate administration
- Cross-border estate and trust issues
- Deemed domicile and residence considerations
- Pre-arrival and departure planning
- Complex HMRC enquiries involving trusts or estates
Outside of work, Ryan enjoys spending time in the garden and watching rugby. He is also a longstanding heavy metal fan – something that tends to surprise people more often than expected.
