Stephen has over 20 years’ experience advising employers on how to structure, manage and optimise their employment tax affairs.
His expertise ranges from owner-managed businesses and not-for-profits to large corporates. He has helped business in many sectors including energy, technology, retail and hospitality.
Stephen is an expert in employment status and the off-payroll workers’ rules (IR35), having designed the end-to-end controls and assessment framework for a number of large businesses. He also has significant experience in:

- National Minimum Wage (NMW)
- Senior Accounting Officer (SAO) compliance
- Salary sacrifice planning
- Apprenticeship Levy
Stephen began his career at HMRC as an Employer Compliance Officer, later becoming an Inspector of Taxes. He joined us in 2025, having gained experience at Big Four firms and other accountancy & tax practices.
Stephen shares his employment tax expertise as a guest speaker for professional bodies including the ICAEW and CIOT, and via articles in the accountancy press. Away from the world of tax, Stephen is a professional magician, long-time member of The Magic Circle and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
