Call For The Abolition of Rates on Empty Shops

Property, Publications

‘The Telegraph reports that Andrew Perloff, the chairman of Panther Securities, has claimed the government’s practice of charging business rates on empty properties is preventing thousands of Britons from starting their own business.

Mr Perloff says that if the Government allowed local authorities to give all new businesses moving into vacant premises a two-year exemption from the levy that at least 30,000 shops would be leased within a year, creating 150,000 jobs.

He also believes that many of the retail jobs created would also help provide a form of further education for less highly qualified school leavers.’
